Description of the attraction
Castello del Boccale is a large castle in Livorno located in the south of the Antignano quarter on the coastal road leading to Quercianella. The castle got its name due to the fact that the local coast is known as Boccale (Pitcher) or Cala dei Pirati (Pirates Bay).
The core of today's Castello del Boccale was an observation tower built by the Medici in the 16th century, possibly on the ruins of an older structure from the Pisa Republic period. The watchman and several soldiers lived on the tower, but there was absolutely no place on it for placing artillery.
At the end of the 19th century, the watchtower became the property of the Marquise Eleonora Ugolini and was “inscribed” into a medieval-style residence with many battlements. Subsequently, the castle passed to the Whitaker-Ingham family, which removed the battlements at the beginning of the 20th century, replacing them with a conventional sloping roof. Castello del Boccale has recently been renovated and divided into several residential apartments. And in the surrounding park, a small tower was restored, which housed a warehouse. Nearby are the Castello Sonnino Castle and the Torre di Calafuria Tower.
Castello del Boccale consists of a rectangular main building surrounded by three small round turrets. An old tower with windows rises on the façade closest to the sea.
