Description of the attraction
Mount Papay is a complex natural monument, which is a famous landmark in the Seversky District of the Krasnodar Territory.
Mount Papay is located on the territory of the Seversky and Abinsky regions at the sources of three rivers: Papai, Ubin and Bolshoi Khabl and is the westernmost rocky peak of the Caucasus. It is a small mountain range that consists of seven peaks, namely: Main Popeye, East Popeye, West Popeye, North Popeye, West Popeye 2 and two other mountain peaks that do not have names. The main peak has a height of 818, 68 m.
According to archaeologists, the Papay peak got its name from the “Papagi” ethnic group, who inhabited the surroundings in the V-X century. Another version of the origin of the name of the mountains is associated with the ancient tribes - the Scythians, who inhabited the North Caucasus and the Northern Black Sea region from the 7th century. BC. up to III Art. AD According to the surviving legends, the Scythians had a cult of the "seven gods". The most important of them was Popeye - the god of thunder and lightning, equal to Zeus. Thus, this peak could have been named by the Scythians in honor of their main deity Papaya.
The massif located in the vicinity of the resort of Gelendzhik has a very diverse flora. Here, among the trees, the communities of the rock oak prevail. From the herbaceous-shrub cover on the mountain slopes, mainly grow: red hawthorn, feather grass, cinnamon rose, occasionally there is Germanic medlar, hair-feather grass and hairy-flowered blob. High and red junipers dominate the summit areas.
Juniper woodlands on Mount Papay have therapeutic properties. According to the research of Professor V. P. Tokina, a hectare of juniper forest can emit into the atmosphere about 30 kg of volatile substances that have antifungal and bactericidal properties - phytoncides. This amount of phytoncides is enough to sterilize the air of an entire city.
As for the animal kingdom, here you can find wild boars, roe deer and even a chamois.
Many tourists from different parts of the country come to sing Mount Popeye.
