Description of the attraction
Mount Petros is located in the Carpathians, 15 kilometers south of the village of Yasinya. The height of this mountain reaches 2020 meters and it is only 15 meters inferior to Brebeneskul and by 41 meters to Hoverla. This mountain has long attracted the conquerors of the mountains with a grandiose view of the peak extending beyond the clouds.
The hiking trails to Petros are very popular as the natural panoramas are breathtaking. It is impossible not to admire the spruce forests that cover the mountain by two-thirds, as well as thickets of blueberries, junipers and rhododendrons. Closer to the top of the mountain, a particularly beautiful landscape opens up in the form of endless mountain meadows covered with colorful bright flowers. In winter, the mountain is also unusually beautiful, but also dangerous, as there are often avalanches here.
The name of the mountain Petros is translated from the Romanian language as "stone". But locals believe that the name of the mountain is associated with an ancient legend. Legend has it that at a time when magical, fabulous creatures lived on earth, a monster called Strakhopud lived in a deep hole near this mountain. This monster terrified all the inhabitants of nearby villages and demanded constant tribute in the form of animal sacrifices. But the moment came when there were no animals for offerings in the villages, and Strakhopud became a threat to the inhabitants. And then the brave brother and sister decided to outwit and kill the monster. Having built giant arrows, the sister began to distract the monster, and her brother, whose name was Petrik, in the meantime, was able to kill the bloodthirsty monster. But, dying, the monster fell on her sister, and thus took her life. For his brother, this became a great grief, which he could not stand, and died near the place of his sister's death. Since that time, the place from which the shot at Strahopuda was fired has been named after his brother - Petros.
