Shirak Airport serves the second largest city in Armenia, after the capital, Gyumri. The city is located in the Shirak region, therefore it is called the Shirak airport. The airport is located about 6 kilometers from the city center.
The history of the airport dates back to 1961. At the end of the 70s, young architects created a project for a new airport building, which was implemented in 1982. Subsequently, the architects received an honorary award for their work.
The airport in Gyumri, if necessary, is used as a backup, in case of bad weather conditions in the capital's airport Zvartnots. The airport has one runway, its length is just over 3200 meters. About 70 thousand passengers are served here annually.

Since 2007, the airport has been owned by International Airports CJSC, which also operates the capital's airport. In addition, the company owns several airports in South America. Its owner is Eduardo Eurnekian.
