The Central Market is located in the historical center of Kuala Lumpur, a kilometer from the Central Railway Station and very close to Chinatown. This is one of the most visited places in the capital - both as an architectural landmark of colonial times, and as a center for entertainment and shopping.
The market appeared as a grocery only three decades after the city was founded - in 1888. And immediately became famous as a place where the freshest fish is sold. In 1937, a building was built for traders in handicrafts. They came to this capital market from all over Malaysia.
The market functioned without interruption until the end of the last century, when the authorities decided to move the trade in food from the old center. The building of the Central Market was recognized as a valuable monument of colonial architecture. It has been renovated with modern equipment and air conditioning, while retaining its character and unique Asian charm.
The new version emphasized the multi-ethnicity of Malaysia.
Since the early 2000s, the Central Market has become a multicultural center of folk art - with artisan workshops, art shops and souvenir shops. The retail space has been designed with all ethnic groups in mind. The market has China Strait, Indian Lane, etc. Together they form one large folk craft fair that spans the entire first floor of the market. Here you can buy local paintings, dishes, national clothes, handmade from batik and wood, etc. And also watch the work of artists, see the process of making a variety of souvenirs.
The second floor of the market is occupied by a large-scale food court with a large number of restaurants and cafes offering all the variety of Asian cuisine.
The best time to visit the market is in the evening, when tents with food and equipment are added to the art bazaar. And on the stage next to the market, concerts, dance and theatrical performances are held.
Various establishments are gathered around, which thematically continue the concept of the market. Nearby, in the gallery of modern art, fashion shows, art exhibitions, installations are held. The shops of famous brands are located around the market. There is also a small new Kasturi market, in the shops of which you can find goods much cheaper.
