Koh Samui (another version of this name is Koh Samui) is one of the largest islands in Thailand. Even those who have never been here have probably heard about this island: it is a very popular resort.

The island is located about seven hundred kilometers from the Thai capital. Its area is almost two hundred and thirty square kilometers. The center of the island is mountainous. It is a continuous jungle. Lowland begins closer to the sea.

At the end of autumn, the island is covered with showers: this is the rainy season, which ends in February. This is followed by the dry season, which lasts until May. After that, for several months, the island is beautifully weather, sometimes interrupted by short rains (they last no more than ten seconds).

Once on this island, travelers usually take many photographs in an effort to capture the incredible beauty of the local nature. White sand beaches, powerful trunks of coconut trees, shine of sea water, and in it - bright exotic fish and magnificent coral reefs … All this looks like a fairy tale that has come true.

Several years ago, the island received a new status - it became an independent resort city (previously it was under the jurisdiction of another Thai city). In this article, we will tell you in detail about its areas and where it is better to stay on Koh Samui.

Samui is officially divided into seven territorial units, which are called tambons here. But for tourists, the situation looks a little different: they distinguish ten areas of the resort island - by the number of beaches (not far from each of which there are cafes, restaurants, hotels, shopping centers). Each of these areas has its own characteristics.

Bophut

Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa

This area is located in the northeastern part of the island. There is a very large selection of cafes and hotels; first of all, this statement applies, of course, to the central street of the district. You will also see many stalls there. Here you can buy souvenirs that will remind you of white beaches and coconut palms, buy gifts for family and friends. Plain, casual clothes are also sold here; if you arrived to the island dressed out of season, you can buy the necessary things here. The stalls are open from morning until late at night.

The market is open on Fridays, but it only opens during the evening hours. Here you can buy fresh fruits and even various dishes of Thai national cuisine. The market also sells clothing and footwear. If you prefer to buy clothes and food in supermarkets, there are also supermarkets in the district. There are three supermarkets here.

The pride of the region is dentistry. The local clinic is considered the best on the island. It is unlikely that you will need this information during your vacation, but still, just in case, it will not hurt to know about this. By the way, there is a go-kart area near the clinic.

And, of course, one cannot but tell about the main attraction of the area - the beach. This is a sand spit considered by many visitors to be one of the most beautiful places on the island. This beach will appeal to lovers of privacy, peace and quiet. And not far from the sea, there are very colorful and cozy hotels and restaurants.

Where to stay: Zazen Boutique Resort & Spa, Bandara Resort & Spa, Bo Phut Resort & Spa.

Mae Nam

Samui Buri Beach Resort

This is the northernmost area of the island. There is a beach here with a fantastic view: among the waves, between the sea and the blue sky, you can see the neighboring island. The sand on the beach is coarse, sometimes pebbles can come across (but there are very few of them). The entrance to the water is shallow, but the depth increases rather quickly. The beach is several kilometers long. The width is about seven meters.

There is a great choice of hotels here. Another advantage of the area is the market. It is only open in the evenings. The market is located near the main street. Here you can buy souvenirs, as well as various exotic products. If you are interested in locally produced goods, then this market is just what you need.

Another market opens in the middle of the week. It only works one day a week and only in the evenings.

Where to stay: Saree Samui, Samui Buri Beach Resort, Escape Beach Resort.

Chong Mon

Sala Samui Resort

The area is very picturesque. Here you can see all the riot and brightness of the tropical nature. The sand on the local beach is surprisingly soft, almost velvety. The entrance to the water is very convenient.

There are no nightclubs or discos in this area. Here you will find almost no entertainment. But on the other hand, there are several wonderful hotels not far from the sea; there are also cafes and restaurants where you can eat deliciously.

You won't write much about this area, but it is very pleasant to relax here. Tourists enjoy spending time on the local beach, willingly settling here in hotels overlooking the sea. And for entertainment, you can always go to another area of the city.

Where to stay: Sala Samui Resort, Samui Honey Cottages, Baiyoke Seacoast Samui.

Bang Cancer

Beach House
Beach House

Beach House

Another area where you will not hear the noise of discos or loud voices of tourists at night. The atmosphere is ideal for those who dream of a relaxing holiday. The area is well suited for families with small children.

If you suddenly get tired of the silence and want unrestrained fun, you can always use the city public transport and get to any area that interests you. This will not be difficult at all.

There are usually not many tourists on the local beach, the sand is very clean. The shore slopes gently into the water.

But the main attraction of the area is not the beach, but a Buddhist temple. He stands at the top of the hill. This is a whole complex of buildings. Some of them have no religious significance, but are retail outlets. The entrance to the territory of the temple is free. You can come here any day of the week, but only during daylight hours. In the temple, visitors are offered special tablets on which they need to write down cherished desires: it is believed that they will certainly come true.

Where to stay: Beach House, Park Lane, The Gardens.

Chaweng

Samui Paradise Chaweng Beach Resort Spa

This is the most popular area of the island. Here life is in full swing and fun reigns. The beach here is magnificent: crystal clear water and white fine sand. The entrance to the water is just perfect: if you are relaxing here with your child, you can safely let him go swimming.

There is a fairly large selection of shopping centers and supermarkets in this area. There are also several markets here.

The area is perfect for young people and all lovers of nightlife: there are places where you can have a lot of fun both in the daytime and in the dark.

Where to stay: Samui Paradise Chaweng Beach Resort Spa, Ozo Chaweng Samui, Chaweng Villawee.

Lamai

Ammatara Pura Pool Villas
Ammatara Pura Pool Villas

Ammatara Pura Pool Villas

Another popular area of the island. The beach here is very wide, entry into the sea is comfortable. The nightlife is not as vibrant as in the area described in the previous section, but there are still plenty of places to have a good time. There are many bars not far from the coast, all of them open until late at night. These bars often host dancing and fun parties.

The area is distinguished by a variety of hotels: you can stay in a simple inexpensive house or in a luxurious room - it all depends on your desire.

Where to stay: Ammatara Pura Pool Villas, Rocky's, Pavilion Samui Villas & Resort.

Lipa Noy

The Siam Residence Boutique Resort

The main attraction of the area is the pier. From the beach you can watch the movement of ships. It should be noted that the sea water is always clear here, sea vessels do not have a negative impact on it. Tropical greenery separates the beach strip from the nearby road.

The area is decorated with luxurious villas, there are also many fashionable hotels. But if you prefer more budget accommodation options, then in this case it is easy to find housing here: you can settle in an inexpensive house or rent a room.

If you want to taste the local national cuisine, then you can easily find several cafes and restaurants serving just this. If you prefer European cuisine or fast food, your desire will also be easily fulfilled.

Where to stay: Samui House, The Siam Residence Boutique Resort, Lipa Lodge Beach Resort.

Bang Po

Silent Palm
Silent Palm

Silent Palm

The area is located in the northwestern part of the island. The length of the beach located here is approximately five kilometers. Its territory is divided into three parts: central, western and eastern. They are separated from each other by stones.

If you prefer markets and supermarkets close to where you live, then this area is not for you. For shopping, you will have to travel to another area.

The choice of accommodation here is quite large: you can rent a luxury villa or a small bungalow.

Where to stay: Bang Po Village, Silent Palm, Bedroom Seaview Villa Bang Por.

Taling Ngam

The Beach Samui

The area is located in the southwest of the island. This part of the city is significantly removed from both the airport and those areas where nightlife is concentrated. For this reason, the area is considered one of the quietest on the island. If you like silence, look for accommodation here. The beach here looks like a piece of paradise. It is not for nothing that lovers so often make romantic meetings there.

If you are a romantic who does not particularly appreciate the benefits of civilization, then the area, no doubt, you will like. The nature here is simply magnificent, but the infrastructure is poor. You won't find luxurious villas here, but you can easily find housing at affordable prices. There is no nightlife on the territory of the district: after sunset, the streets are empty and absolute silence sets in. It is disturbed only by the sound of the sea.

Where to stay: The Beach Samui, Konrad Koh Samui Residences, Am Samui Resort.

Nathon

Nathon Residences Hotel
Nathon Residences Hotel

Nathon Residences Hotel

The area is located in the west of the island. The administrative center of the city is located here. The hospital, the police, the immigration office are all located here.

Swimming is not recommended here. The city port is located here. By taking the ferry, you can easily get to one of the neighboring islands or to the mainland.

The area is not considered a tourist area, but it has one big advantage: prices are quite low here. This applies to cafes and restaurants, hotels and shops. Everything is cheaper here than in other parts of the city.
