Once part of Yugoslavia, Serbia is now an independent state. The war and bombing strikes by NATO forces have caused serious damage to local infrastructure, among other things, roads in Serbia have been badly damaged. However, since then there has been a constant recovery process, and traveling around this country by car will provide an opportunity to get acquainted with beautiful places and visit Belgrade.
Types of roads in Serbia
Many roads were said to have been severely damaged. But their restoration is one of the main tasks of the government, and it is being successfully solved. More recently, many travelers complained about the disgusting quality of local roads, with a large number of potholes and holes. However, now many roads, especially large highways, have received a high-quality flat surface, which allows you to travel with comfort and without any particular difficulties.
All major settlements in Serbia are linked by a network of municipal roads. There is also an expressway across the country, on which you can accelerate to 120 km / h. It crosses the territory of the state from north to south, linking Belgrade with other populous cities.
Some of the major highways are toll, most of them leave the capital of Serbia. The amount of the fare depends on the category of transport, as well as on the distance traveled. These autobahns are distinguished by several wide lanes and excellent asphalt.
In the south-west of the country there are numerous mountain ranges, and the roads here take on the character of winding serpentines. However, despite the many sharp turns and dark passages in the tunnels, driving here is not as dangerous as in many neighboring countries. After all, the roadbed on these passages here is of good quality, many steep roads have barriers.
Local police and traffic regulations
A significant part of road traffic is concentrated in large cities, along the main highways. Traffic can be quite dense here, but the number of lanes sufficient for traffic allows you to move quickly enough.
The main points of behavior on local roads include:
- The benevolence of the police, although tales of evil representatives of the traffic police and widespread bribery are not uncommon. However, without breaking the rules, no one is pulled here, so law-abiding drivers have nothing to fear.
- Violation of the speed limit is acceptable here within reasonable limits. No more than 20 km / h above the permitted speed, most likely, will not entail any penalties.
Serbian drivers behave quite adequately, although sometimes unpleasant situations happen on the roads.
Although Serbia has no access to the sea and there are no special attractions here, you can still go to this small state. It is easy to rent a car here and drive on roads that are improving every year. The most spectacular and memorable part of the trip can be a trip along the mountain serpentines, which are comfortable enough for drivers who do not even have much driving experience. In other areas, no problems on the roads should arise even for beginners behind the wheel.
