Anyone who has seen the coat of arms of Uglich for the first time will note that the main official symbol of the city undoubtedly has a long history, obviously dating back more than one century. The second point that catches the eye when examining the city emblem is the brightness of the color palette, the dominance of the scarlet color and its shades, this is especially noticeable in color photos and in glossy illustrations.
Description of the coat of arms of the city
The modern heraldic symbol is a shield, which has a French shape, which is popular in Russia. On the shield there is an image of the famous Tsarevich Dmitry. The following details of the royal attire can be noted:
- purple dress decorated with gold inserts and precious stones;
- purple boots;
- precious gold crown with purple lining.
In addition, it can be noted that a golden halo is visible above the prince's head, and in his right hand he holds a silver-colored knife with the tip up. This beautiful coat of arms was restored by the local municipality in 1999, first as a symbol of the Uglich District, and after its abolition, as a symbol of the city.
From the history of the heraldic sign
For the first time, the image of Tsarevich Dmitry, innocently killed, appeared on the banners of the Uglich Infantry Regiment in 1727. Already this first symbol in many features coincides with the current coat of arms of the city. A small nuance - on the first emblem, the prince was depicted standing on a green base.
Since 1730, with the appearance of the Znamenny coat of arms, the described image is present not only on the banners of the regiment in Uglich. The drawing appears on seals that are used to fasten various official papers; the military emblem becomes the official coat of arms of the city. In 1778, Empress Catherine II approved the heraldic symbol of Uglich, along with other coats of arms of cities that are territorially part of the Yaroslavl governorship.
In 1863, a new version of the Uglich coat of arms appeared, proposed by the court heraldist Köne. The main image was preserved - Tsarevich Dmitry, armed with a knife, in a gold dress, standing on a scarlet field. There were additions - the coat of arms of the Yaroslavl province was located in the free part of the shield field. The second additional element is a silver crown, and a frame in the form of gold ears decorated with the Andreevskaya ribbon also appeared. This option was not approved.
During the years of Soviet power, Uglich remained without a coat of arms, although from time to time certain symbols associated with the city appeared on souvenir badges. The historical coat of arms returned in the late 1990s.
