The name of this seaside town, located on the southern coast of the Crimean peninsula, comes from the ancient Greek language, translated rather funny - "draft". On the other hand, this location of the city causes constant winds.
The history of Alushta began in the 6th century from the Aluston fortress. The fortification appeared thanks to the Emperor Justinian I. Later the name of the fortress was transformed and sounded like "Alusta", close to the modern toponym.
Change of power
During the Middle Ages, the fortress saw many rulers, honestly fulfilling its mission as a stronghold on the southern coast of Crimea. Throughout the Middle Ages, whoever did not appear in the city - Genoese, Turks, Ottomans, Russians. During the reign of the latter, Alushta fell into decay, turned into a small village, where mainly fishermen and their families lived. But it was in this place that the troops of the Turkish army landed at the climax of the confrontation between the Russian Empire and Turkey.
Together with Russia
The annexation of Crimea to the then-strong Russian Empire opened a new page. Alushta changes its status - it becomes a volost center, first in Simferopol, then Yalta districts. The end of the 19th century opened up new prospects for the development of the town as a resort.
Popularity grew before our eyes, in 1902 Alushta finally acquired the long-awaited status of a city. Now there is active construction not only in the center, but also in the surrounding area, a resort suburb is developing. Interestingly, it changes its name several times from the Professor's Corner to the Working Corner (in the 1920s) and vice versa.
During the Second World War, German troops occupied Alushta, which caused irreparable damage to the city, historical monuments were destroyed, punitive operations, executions, and hijacking to work in Germany were carried out. Then the city experienced another terrible event - the forcible deportation of the Crimean Tatars in 1944 by order of Stalin.
In the 1960s, the restoration of the city began, the construction of sanatoriums and boarding houses. In addition, Alushta is becoming a favorite place for the capital's filmmakers - it is here that many famous films of that time are filmed.
