It cannot be said that pilgrimage tours to Serbia appeared on the tourist market long ago. Nevertheless, Orthodox believers increasingly go on such trips, which take place in an atmosphere of cordiality and hospitality (the pilgrimage is supported not only by the Church, but also by local residents).
Pilgrimage in Serbia attracts numerous travelers thanks to the preserved monasteries and holy places.
Church of Saint Sava in Belgrade
The designers of the temple took the Sophia Cathedral as a basis, although it is higher (height - 65 m) and its dome is larger (up to 35 m in diameter). The Church of St. Sava was recognized as the largest monastery (its area is 7,500 square meters) and can accommodate up to 10,000 people during religious holidays. Travelers will be able to inspect not only its facade (the main building material is white marble), but also the interior decoration (special attention should be paid to the mosaic inside the dome).
Monasteries of the Ovcharsko-Kablar gorge
In the Ovcharsko-Kablar gorge, about 20 monasteries were erected, but only 10 have survived to this day (9 of them are active). So, the attention of pilgrims deserves the John the Baptist, Nikolaev, Sretensky, Vvedensky and other monasteries.
Fruska Gora monasteries
Among them are Velika Remeta (famous for its 7-storey bell tower - the highest on Fruska Gora), Beochin (there is a 5-storey iconostasis dating from 1756-1766; in the monastery you can see the church veil of the 14-15th centuries, the venerated icon of the Mother of God, illuminated Gospels of the 15-16 centuries), Grgeteg (there is a copy of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God "Three-handed"; if you wish, you can visit the museum and see the exposition of items preserved in the vestries of the Fruskogorsk monasteries) and other monasteries.
Monastery Mileseva near Priepolye
It is famous for its frescoes: pilgrims will be able to see the frescoes "Adoration of the Holy Fathers" (fragments) and "White Angel".
Monasteries of the Valley of the Kings
- Djurdzhevi-Stupovi Monastery: It is dedicated to Saint George and is a monument of the Rash style. Here you will be able to visit a museum with archaeological finds and fragments of destroyed structures on display (they were discovered on the territory where the monastery is located).
- Sopochany Monastery: interesting for its frescoes of the 13th-17th centuries, the most famous of which are the "Dormition of the Mother of God" and "Great Feasts". In addition, here pilgrims will be able to pray in front of the relics of the holy doctors Damian and Cosmas.
- Monastery Studenica: there are two churches inside; Its main attraction is the frescoes of the 13-14 centuries, and the main shrines are the relics of Simeon the Myrrh-streaming (founder of the monastery) and his wife, as well as the relics of godly people, in particular Nicholas the Wonderworker.
- Zicha Monastery: once it was surrounded by towers and walls, from which today there are gates, adorned with post-Byzantine frescoes (after restoration work around the monastery complex, a new stone fence appeared). It is worth noting that Serbian church leaders are buried in the monastery necropolis.
