Spread out on the shores of the second largest lake in Europe, this city is famous for Karelian birches, white nights and its magnificent embankment. In Petrozavodsk, it is paved with Karelian granite and stretches from the river station to the Wedding Palace.

Onega embankment was officially opened in 1994 and since then it has become a favorite meeting and recreation place for the residents of Petrozavodsk and guests of the Republic of Karelia. The second phase of the embankment construction began in 2002. This part of the shore of Lake Onega was made in the architectural style of the 19th century.

Exhibition of sculptures

Petrozavodsk has a lot of twin cities and each of them made a worthy contribution to the decoration of the city embankment. Along the shore of Lake Onega, there are unique sculptures donated by foreign craftsmen:

  • Riga has sent as a gift to Karelia the monument "The Purse of Fortune" by Aivars Kerlins. Petrozavodsk residents now consider stroking a "happy" sculpture to be a good way to attract money.
  • The Wish Tree is another wonderful masterpiece that brings good luck. It was sent to Karelia by the Swedes from the town of Umeå.
  • The Germans from Tübingen presented the "Tubingen panel" to the embankment of Petrozavodsk, and the residents of Neubrandenburg - the monument "Under some stars", symbolizing peace and cooperation between countries.
  • Finnish comrades presented two sculptures to the Karelian capital - "Wave of Friendship" and "Spark of Friendship" with the hope for cooperation and partnership.
  • The American master from the town of Duluth presented the composition "Fishermen" as a gift, and the Frenchman from La Rochelle preferred to send "The Sleeping Beauty" to the shores of Lake Onega.

Local craftsmen did not lag behind their foreign colleagues and the embankment of Petrozavodsk is now decorated with angels and lovers, a rose and hedgehogs and even a pyramid in honor of the 300th anniversary of the city's foundation.

The bronze monument to Peter the Great at the corner of the embankment and Marx Avenue greets all guests who descend to the shore of the lake at the dock of the river station. By the way, it is from here that ships leave for Kizhi in the summer.

Tourist notes

The easiest way to get to the embankment of Petrozavodsk is by trolleybus routes 1, 2 and 4, and from the railway station you can slowly walk here in half an hour.
