The Nanjing Metro can be classified as a traditional light rail transport for many rapidly developing cities. The construction of the first stations and branches began in 2000, and the first stage was put into operation in 2005. Today, the Nanjing metro has four fully operational lines, the total length of which exceeds 130 kilometers. There are 75 stations on the routes for the needs of passengers, which serve more than a million people daily. Nanjing Metro carries at least 450 million passengers annually.
The Nanjing Metro is the fastest way to travel from north to south and from west to east through the business center. Stops are located at major and important points, including the Zhujiang Lu and Xinjiekou shopping centers. The Nanjing Subway provides easy access to the Railway Station and the Olympic Complex.
The first line of the Nanjing subway is marked in bright blue on the maps. It stretches from the north to the city center, where the route deviates westward. Its length is 46 kilometers, of which only 12 are aboveground. The "blue" line allows you to switch to railway lines of suburban and intercity trains at three of its stations.
Line 2 of the Nanjing metro is marked in green on the diagrams and stretches through the city from east to west, and then to the south. The Green Line tracks are 40 kilometers long and connect Jintianlu in the north with Yofancao in the south.
The Nanjing subway uses air-conditioned six-car trains. All voice announcements in carriages are made in Chinese, but station names are duplicated in English on maps and ticket vending machines.
