Description of the attraction
The Berardo Museum of Contemporary Art is located in Belem, a historic district of Lisbon. The area is notable for the fact that it is closely associated with historical discoveries: Prince Heinrich the Navigator set off from Belem, who gathered the first foreign expedition; Vasco da Gama, who paved the sea route to India, and Christopher Columbus stopped in Belem on the way back after the discovery of the New World.
The museum is named after Jose Berardo, a Portuguese entrepreneur, philanthropist and renowned collector. Negotiations on the creation of a museum between the Portuguese government and Jose Berardo lasted for about 10 years, and in 2007 the museum was inaugurated at the Exhibition Center of the Belem Cultural Center. The museum displays works by renowned artists and sculptors of the 20th and early 21st centuries from the Berardo collection, which numbers approximately 1000 items. It is worth noting that the house of Christie estimates the value of Berardo's art collection at $ 410 million. From time to time, some of the exhibits from the famous Berardo collection are exhibited in museums in other countries.
The exhibits of the collection of the Berardo Museum in Lisbon are located on two floors. In addition to paintings and sculptures, photographs are also presented. Among the exhibits of the museum's permanent exhibition are works by artists Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Kazimir Malevich, Andy Warhol and many other famous master painters. The exhibition also features paintings by surrealist, abstract, realist, neo-expressionist painters.
The museum also hosts temporary exhibitions on Portuguese contemporary art.
