Description of the attraction
Volmes is a charming mountain village located in the northern part of the Greek island of Zakynthos amidst picturesque pine forests, olive groves and vineyards. Volmes is located about 30 km north-west of the capital of the island of the same name at an altitude of 400-480 m above sea level and offers its guests delightful landscapes and fantastic panoramic views of the coast of Zakynthos, the endless expanses of the Ionian Sea and the island of Kefalonia.
Volmes is a traditional Greek settlement with its own unique flavor and atmosphere of genuine cordiality and hospitality of local residents. Despite the fact that during a strong earthquake in 1953 Volmes was very badly damaged, there are still a lot of old houses with architecture characteristic of this region and ancient churches, including the Church of St. Paraskeva with magnificent wall paintings and beautiful old icons. … Volmes is an ideal place to relax away from the hustle and bustle of tourists, enjoying the silence and unhurried pace of life of the locals. And although in recent years the tourism industry has begun to develop here on the sly, the choice of accommodation is still very small and it is worth taking care of booking in advance.
Volmes is also an excellent starting point for exploring the northern part of Zakynthos and its sights. The fantastic beauty of Navagio Bay, located a few kilometers from Volmes on the west coast of the island, and the famous Blue Caves in the area of Cape Skinari, deserve special attention. Both of these attractions are accessible only by sea (it is most convenient to organize an excursion from the harbor of Agios Nikolaos). The Anafonitriyas Monastery (14-15th century), where the patron saint of Zakynthos, Saint Dionysius, lived, as well as the Monastery of Saint Andrew with beautiful old frescoes and the Monastery of Saint George, built in the 16th century, are definitely worth a visit. The park-museum Askos Stone Park is also very interesting.
Wolmes is renowned for its excellent handmade lace, carpets, ceramics and excellent quality honey, wine and homemade cheese. All this (and much more) you can buy in local shops, of which there are many.
