Description of the attraction
Logovarda is the largest monastery and one of the most revered shrines of the Greek island of Paros, which is visited annually by thousands of believers from all over the world. It is located about 5 km northeast of the island's capital, Parikia.
The monastery was founded in 1638 by the monk Palaeologus of Naoussa and is dedicated to the Mother of God Zoodochos Pigi. The impressive white monastery was built in the traditional Cycladic archipelago style and looks like a well-fortified fortress. The main catholicon of the monastery is famous for its magnificent wall paintings and beautiful old icons. The Logoward Monastery also has an excellent library with an excellent collection of unique manuscripts and an impressive collection of books, among which there are many very rare and valuable copies.
In 1930, the spiritual son of Saint Nektarios of Aegins, Elder Filovei Zervakos, who was widely known for his high spirituality and good deeds during his lifetime, became the abbot of the monastery. It was he who made sure that many children from low-income families in Paros could receive a decent education. During the Second World War, the monks of the Logoward Monastery, led by their mentor, provided every possible support to the members of the national resistance and their allies. Thanks to Father Felofey, 125 prisoners of war sentenced to death were also released.
As a rule, the monastery is open to the public in the morning. True, it should be borne in mind that Logovarda is an active male monastery and women are strictly prohibited from entering this holy monastery, while men, when visiting the monastery, must take care of proper attire.
