Description of the attraction

The Fado Museum in Lisbon is of particular value to lovers of fado music as well as to those interested in the culture and history of Portugal.

Fado (derived from the Latin “fate”, which means “destiny”) is a special style of traditional Portuguese music. It is a street romance performed by one performer accompanied by two guitars, classical and Portuguese (twelve-string guitar). Fado is sung about fate, about love experiences, about suffering. Fadu are filled with sadness and light melancholy. The genre originated in the 12th century and was finally formed at the beginning of the 19th century. Today there are two main fado centers: Lisbon and Coimbra.

The Fado Museum in Lisbon was opened in 1998 and is housed in a spacious and beautiful building. The exhibits of the museum will tell a lot about the history of this genre. The museum's extensive collection includes many photographs of famous fado performers, instruments, including a Portuguese twelve-string guitar, are on display, and there are multimedia sections with recordings of songs where you can listen to different types of fado. The walls of the museum are dotted with information about how fado developed. The hall of the museum is very interesting, where the history of the Portuguese guitar is told. In this room, a film is shown about how the Portuguese guitar is made by the craftsmen, and various models of guitars are exhibited along the walls. There is also a café where you can enjoy live performances of fado.

It is forbidden to take photographs in the museum, but there is a store that sells books about the art and culture of Portugal, including fado, and you can buy music CDs there.
