Description of the attraction
The Museum of Local Lore in the city of Ulyanovsk, founded in 1895, is located on the first floor of a beautiful building built by the famous architect A. A. Shode in 1916 and is a memorial house to I. A. Goncharov.
The main part of the exhibits was created on the basis of the collections of four museums: the Siberian Scientific Archival Commission, a historical museum, church antiquities and private collections of local residents. A fairly generous archaeological gift was presented to the museum by the provincial leader of the nobility - landowner V. N. Polivanov and amateur archaeologist A. V. Tolstoy in the form of a unique collection of numismatists (2590 collectible coins). Historians and local historians also participated in replenishing the funds of the local history museum: A. K. Yakhontov, P. L. Martynov, V. E. Krasovsky and many other connoisseurs of nature and history of the Simbirsk region.
In 1918, the local history museum moved to a building on Novy Venets boulevard, facing the Volga with its main facade.
In the funds of the museum, located in four halls, in addition to paleontological and archaeological collections, there are numerous exhibits of the history of the Simbirsk Territory: weapons, folk costumes of the 18-20th centuries, documents, photographs, personal belongings of prominent people. In addition to the main exposition, the museum has exhibitions dedicated to people and interesting events.
The Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore named after I. A. Goncharov will be interesting and informative both for novice historians and ordinary tourists who want to plunge into the atmosphere and life of the ancient Simbirsk Territory.
