Description of the attraction

The Del Barro Museum is located on the outskirts of Asuncion, the capital of Paraguay. The museum was founded in 1972 by Olga Blinder and Carlos Colombino. For seven long years, their collection of prints, drawings and ceramics was transported from one exhibition hall to another until a permanent place was found for it. Today the museum is divided into three divisions: the Ceramic Museum, the Indigenous Art Museum and the Paraguayan Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Museum of Ceramics displays about 300 samples of pre-Columbian ceramics and about 4 thousand objects of art made of wood, fabric and metal and dating from the period from the 17th century to the present.

The Museum of Indigenous Art displays baskets, masks, vessels, carved figurines, feather ornaments, lace, created by various ethnic groups living in Paraguay. The pride of the collection, which consists of 1,700 pieces, is considered the five ceremonial costumes of the Ishir ethnic group from the Alto Paraguay department, which were used during the annual ritual called Debilibi. Feathers of various tropical birds are sewn onto the fabric of the costumes. About 90% of the Indigenous Art Museum's exhibits were purchased from various indigenous communities, craft shops and private collections.

The Museum of Modern Art has a collection of paintings by artists from Latin America. Here you can see about 3 thousand drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures by Paraguayan, Argentine, Brazilian and Chilean masters. Of particular note are the works of Livio Abramo, Pedro Aguero, Mabel Arkondo, Olga Blinder, Luis Alberto Bo.
