In 1960, on the basis of the art collections of the Arkhangelsk Regional Museum of Local Lore, the Arkhangelsk Museum of Fine Arts was founded. Today, the museum has about thirty thousand exhibits representing different schools and stylistic trends of the centuries-old artistic culture of the entire Russian North.

The collection of the museum includes works of ancient northern painting and wooden sculpture, ancient Russian decorative and applied art; a rich collection of northern folk art, including folk costume, embroidery and weaving, woodcarving and painting, artistic metal and ceramics. The rarest collection of icons from the 14th-18th centuries, the so-called "northern letters", is of particular value.

Collection of Russian art of the 18th - early 20th centuries. includes works by almost all famous Russian artists. A special place is occupied by the works of northern artists A. A. Borisov and S. G. Pisakhova. Contemporary art is represented by the works of artists of various trends, including masters from Arkhangelsk. The museum possesses the best collection of modern Kholmogory bone carving in the country, a famous art craft with a five-century history.
