Description of the attraction

The idea of creating a museum of the history of the Great Patriotic War was first expressed back in 1943, that is, even before the end of the war itself. The initial stage in the emergence of the museum is considered to be an exhibition opened in April 1946 and dedicated to the activities of Soviet partisans. The next milestone was the inauguration of the museum in October 1974, specializing in the entire war as a whole. However, the complex of premises available at that time was clearly not enough to reveal as fully as possible all the details related to the war. For this reason, it was decided to create a whole memorial complex capable of solving this problem. The museum was based on the developments of the famous sculptor E. Vuchetich, as well as the architect E. Stamo. Hundreds of enterprises, military units and youth had the opportunity to carry out the work.

The opening of the modern museum took place on May 9, 1981, timed to coincide with the next anniversary of the victory. And although the museum reflected the traditions, views and ideology that dominated at that time throughout the USSR, nevertheless, it became one of the most popular in Ukraine. In the early 90s, with a change in the socio-political atmosphere, it was decided to renovate the museum, so in 1992-1995 a radical re-exhibition was held. Now the main attention of the museum was concentrated on the Ukrainian theme, the heroism of the people of Ukraine, as well as its contribution to the victory over the invaders. The museum also pays no less attention to other sectors of the front and battles that took place outside Ukraine.

The entire composition of the museum is located on the territory of 5,000 square meters, it occupies 16 rooms and has more than 15,000 exhibits. The total area of the memorial is 10 hectares, on which, in addition to the museum itself, there are sculptural compositions, galleries, an exhibition of weapons and military equipment, etc.
