Description of the attraction
The small town of St. Lorenz, located on Lake Mondsee, is a popular summer resort. It is located under the Drachenwand cliff, the name of which is translated from German as "Dragon Wall". It is a high, almost sheer cliff, which, however, can be climbed to enjoy the view of the turquoise lake below and the many haze-covered alpine mountains. There are quite a few picturesque peaks in the vicinity of St. Lorenz. On the slopes of most of them, there are walking paths that lead to observation platforms, from where a panorama of not only Mondsee Lake, but also the neighboring Alpine reservoirs opens up.
St. Lorenz is the ideal location for active sports. People come here to play golf, ride a rented yacht, swim in the crystal clear waters of the lake. Cycling trails and hiking trails are located around Lake Mondsee. In winter, downhill skiing lovers gather here.
At a depth of 2-4 meters in Lake Mondsee near the coast in the town of St. Lorenz in the 19th century, the remains of the oldest pile dwellings, dating from 3600-3300, were discovered. BC NS. Thanks to the efforts of J. Offenberger, who in 1972 tried to preserve them for future generations, these most valuable historical objects can be seen even now.
The main sacred monument of St. Lorenz is the one-nave church of St. Lawrence, built between 1726 and 1730 in the Baroque style and decorated with two towers. It is said that the temple was erected on the site of a 14th century wooden church, which is mentioned in the documents of the local abbey.
