Description of the attraction

The Golden Domed Orthodox Church of St. George the Victorious is located in the very center of the city of Kardzhali. The temple is one of the main attractions and symbols of the city. The gilded domes sparkling in the sun attract the attention of both locals and tourists who have come to Kardzhali.

The Church of St. George the Victorious is a cultural monument of local importance. It was built in the 20th century and became the first church to be erected in the Eastern Rhodopes after liberation in 1912. The initiator of the construction was Father Georgy Stoyanov, who arrived in Kardzhali as an army chaplain. Funds for the construction of the temple were provided by the city municipality and the Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, as well as - in the form of donations - by the citizens of the city. The beginning of work dates back to June 27, 1926. Two years later, work on the construction of the temple was completed and it was consecrated by Bishop Khariton. Later, in 1954, the vaults of the church were decorated with paintings.

According to its architectural design, the Church of St. George the Victorious is a three-nave cross-domed church. A bell tower rises above the porch of the central entrance. Thanks to the external decoration made of marble, gilded tiles and domes, as well as decorative sculptural elements, the temple looks majestic and monumental.

An Orthodox educational center operates at the church, where a summer camp for children is opened annually.
