Description of the attraction
The monument to the sailor and the soldier rises forty meters in height. In Sevastopol, it can be seen from afar. Tourists are usually overwhelmed by the size of the monument, but many city residents find it unfortunate.
The monument is located on the Crystal Cape, it adorns the southern front facade of the city. From the northern side of the bay, it is also clearly visible, and when you walk through the central region of Sevastopol, the monument constantly reminds of itself. At one time, they even wanted to demolish the monument, they considered it controversial.
Undoubtedly, this sculpture is a decoration of the city. However, its detailed examination allowed some connoisseurs to express dissatisfaction with the too rough features of the heroes of the monument. There is an opinion that the monument from some positions resembles a huge spider. Others believe that the soldiers' weapons are pointing in the wrong direction. Although such judgments are rare. But tourists are always delighted with the monument. One detail that we can agree with is that up close the huge figures are somewhat overwhelming. But it is worth considering the monument from a close distance at least in order to appreciate its colossal dimensions.
The monument was conceived as part of a large memorial composition on the Crystal Cape, which never materialized. The work began in 1981. Project manager - N. Zharikov, authors of the monument - S. Voytsekhovsky and V. Klimik, also took part: architect K. Sidorov, sculptors G. Petroshevich, O. Suprun, E. Belostotsky, engineer A. Umansky. In 1988, the construction of the monument was suspended.
The monument remained unfinished. In 1990, the city authorities even wanted to dismantle the sculptural composition as deemed unsuccessful. The complex was gradually pulled apart and plundered. And in 1992, they wanted to sell the building of the unfinished museum for an amount equal to fifty hryvnia. And only veterans defended the monument and defended it.
Since 2004, work has been resumed. In 2005, five million hryvnias were allocated for the completion, but this amount was not enough for such a large-scale project. They restored what had already been created, and in 2007 the monument was unveiled. Thirty-five years are between the start of this project and its completion.
Today, lawns with flowers and paths surround the sculpture, here are the alleys of recently planted trees. And at the foot of the monument there is a large square lined with tiles. It offers a wonderful view of the Sevastopol Bay.
