It is important to know the nuances of parking in Germany for every traveler planning to rent a car and drive it on the high-speed German Autobahn. It is worth noting that there are no toll roads in Germany: a fee is charged only for entering the center of cities such as Hanover, Cologne and Berlin (Umweltzone zone), the Herren tunnels (1.5 euros) and Warnow (3.8 euros).
Features of parking in Germany
You can park for free in Germany:
- on the side of the road, if there is no prohibitory sign (white zigzag markings indicate a parking ban);
- at special sites, which are usually located outside the city (from there to the city center and in the opposite direction, you can take the Pendelbus bus);
- in free parking, limited in time (how long you can leave the car without payment will be indicated on the sign). In this case, you will have to purchase an indicator (at gas stations it costs 1-2 euros), which will record the time of arrival at the parking lot. Fines are provided for delay: up to half an hour - 10 euros, up to 1 hour - 15 euros, over 3-hour delay - 30 euros.
Only local residents are allowed to leave the car on the street. For tourists, there are parking lots, for the payment of services of which there is a special machine that issues a parking ticket. It is worth considering that some parking lots have parking discs sold at all gas stations (the disc with the arrival time displayed on it should be placed under the windshield).
German parking lots look different: they can be represented as small garages for 10 cars, or buildings that can accommodate more than 1000 cars. In addition, some of them can be located underground or be multi-level buildings. The car tourists entering the parking lot are helped by special signs, which reflect information about the cost and the number of vacant seats (having paid for a place, there is no need to worry about the expiration of the validity of the coupon and the possible payment of a fine). There is a barrier at the entrance, the rise of which occurs automatically after pressing the appropriate button and receiving a ticket. It must be saved and inserted into the machine to pay for the parking space upon departure.
Parking in cities of Germany
Parking in Frankfurt is not easy: it is advisable for tourists to stay in hotels with their own parking (for guests - free of charge). In the city itself, there are parking lots with special markings (the approximate price is 1, 6-2 euros / hour and 2.5 euros / per night). To park at Parkhaus Hauptwache, car owners will be asked to pay 0, 50 euros / 30 minutes and 2, 50 euros / hour (a parking space from 7 pm to 9 am costs 4 euros), at Turmcenter - 2 euros / hour from 7 am to 7 pm and 1 euro / hour from 19:00 to 07:00, at Parkhaus Constabler - 2 euros / hour (4 euros / from 7 pm to 07:00 and 190 euros / month), and at An der Kleinmarkthalle 7 Parking - 1 euro / 20 minutes (drivers are entitled to a free parking space for 1 hour on Sundays, on Saturdays from 5 pm to 8 am and on Mondays-Fridays from 7 pm to 08:00).
Free parking in Berlin can only be found on the outskirts of the capital, and temporary free parking - at supermarkets and large stores. The cost of the paid ones is 1.5-2.5 euros / hour (in underground parking lots the payment is made per day and is 20-25 euros). So, for parking on Zone 14 you will have to pay 0, 25 euros / 15 minutes (every subsequent 3 minutes are charged at 0, 05 euros; from Monday to Friday from 8 pm to 9 am, on Saturdays from 6 pm to 9 am and on Sundays from 09:00 to 09:00 parking is free), at the Ramada Hotel - 2 euros / hour (20 euros / day), and on Otto-Braun-Strabe 67 - 0.5 euros / 15 minutes (the cost of the next 1.5 minutes - 0.05 euros).
As for parking lots in Stuttgart, a parking space at Marquardtbau costs 2 euros / hour (12 euros / day), and at Friedrichsbau - 2, 50 euros / hour (20 euros / day).
