Description of the attraction
Federation Square is one of the favorite meeting places for Melbourne residents, as well as a venue for cultural and social events in the heart of the city. This is a real full-fledged quarter, bounded by the Yarra River on one side and Flinders Street, Swenson Street and Russell Street with three others with an area of about 40 thousand square meters. Around the perimeter of the square, there are various galleries, cinemas, museums, cafes, bars and restaurants. And in the middle of all this are two main places for holding public gatherings: one - the Atrium - located under the roof, the second - under the open sky. The amphitheater accommodates 35 thousand people. Interestingly, there are train tracks under the square that take trains to the nearby Flinders Street Station. The square offers stunning views of the southern bank of the Yarra River and the parks located there.
I must say that the place where Federation Square is located today has always played a significant role in the history of Melbourne: at different times there were a depot, Princess Bridge railway station, and a mosque. It was only in 1997 that it was decided to reconstruct this vast space between the city center and the river, resulting in the current complex of buildings and public spaces that invariably attracts citizens and tourists here. All buildings of the square have an irregular shape - the designers called them “fragments”, and this name stuck and is used to this day. The official opening of Federation Square took place in 2002. Every year about a thousand different events are held here, which are attended by over 8 million people! It is Victoria's second most popular tourist attraction.
