Description of the attraction

4 km from Prinos is the mountain village of Kazaviti - one of the oldest and most beautiful settlements on the Greek island of Thassos. In fact, Kazaviti is two settlements almost merged together - Micro Kazaviti and Megalo Kazaviti. Literally buried in greenery, the villages descend along the slopes of the mountains towards each other in a picturesque mountain valley.

The territory of modern Kazaviti has been inhabited since ancient times. The ideal location among the mountain ranges overgrown with dense vegetation perfectly hid the locals from pirates and other conquerors who regularly hunted in the coastal waters of Thassos.

The village of Kazaviti, as we see it today, was built for the most part already in the 19th century. It was during this period, when the Ottoman sultan handed over the island to his governor in Egypt Ali Mehmet in 1813, that the settlement reached its peak. Unfortunately, by the middle of the 20th century, Kazaviti fell into decay and in 1955 was finally abandoned. Most of the locals moved to the coastal town of Prinos, whose economic and social conditions offered much more opportunities, and some even left the island.

Kazaviti received a new breath already in 1975, when large-scale restoration work began in order to preserve the magnificent old buildings - the cultural and historical heritage of the island. Today you can see in Kazaviti many beautifully restored old stone houses with wooden balconies and painted ceilings. Of particular interest are also the Church of St. George and the Church of the Twelve Apostles (both built at the beginning of the 19th century). It is worth visiting the monastery of St. Panteleimon, located just above Kazaviti, on the slope of the mountain.

Kazaviti is an ideal place for lovers of a secluded and relaxing holiday close to nature, away from the bustle of the city and crowds of tourists. Here you will find a good selection of excellent apartments, and in the cozy taverns in the central square, under the spreading ancient plane trees, you can relax and taste the excellent local cuisine. Undoubtedly, walks in the picturesque surroundings of Kazaviti will also be a great pleasure.
