Description of the attraction

Sigri is a picturesque fishing village on the west coast of the Greek island of Lesvos. The settlement is located about 94 km from the administrative center of the island, the city of Mytilene, on a small peninsula and has long been famous for its well-protected natural harbor. Actually, its name comes from the word "siguro", which means "safe harbor".

Sigri is a traditional Greek settlement not spoiled by tourists with its own special flavor, an abundance of cozy restaurants and taverns and an unforgettable atmosphere of cordiality and hospitality of local residents. This is an ideal place for those who love a quiet and secluded holiday away from crowded places, where you can fully enjoy the "taste of real Greece". If you are planning to stay in Sigri, you need to take into account that the choice of accommodation here is relatively small, and it is still better to take care of booking in advance.

Among the sights of Sigri, it is undoubtedly worth noting the ruins of an old Turkish fortress, which was built at the tip of the peninsula in the 18th century, during the rule of the Ottoman Empire on the island, specifically to protect the harbor of Sigri. However, the Church of Agia Triada, built by the Turks as a mosque and used in this capacity until 1923, is no less interesting. The Museum of Natural History deserves special attention - an entertaining geological museum, as well as a center for the study, management and conservation of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos. The Petrified Forest itself is located just 8 km from Sigri and is one of the most famous and popular attractions of the island (since 2004, the Petrified Forest of Lesvos is a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network).
