Description of the attraction
Vietri sul Mare is one of the most popular resorts on the Amalfi Riviera. Located on a hill, this city is considered a real gem and a kind of gateway to the famous beaches of the Riviera. Vietri consists of six districts - Albori, Benincasa, Dragonea, Marina, Molina and Raito.
The first inhabitants of these places were the Etruscan tribes. Then the Romans appeared here, who probably gave the settlement the name Veteri, later replaced by Vietri. Until 1086, Vietri was only part of another city - Cava de Tirreni, on which it completely depended. And in 1944, this small town became known to the whole world, since in the nearby Salerno in those years there was the capital of the Italian Republic - here the royal family was hiding from the Nazis.
Today Vietri sul Mare is a very popular resort. It is so picturesque and interesting for its cultural heritage that in 1997 UNESCO included it in the list of World Cultural Heritage sites. Local landscapes combine the beauty of unspoiled nature and charming, well-tended lands that have been cultivated by people for many hundreds of years - grapes and citrus fruits are grown here. And in the Albora area, you can even find some species of carnivorous plants.
Despite the fact that Vietri sul Mare is a small town with a population of only about 8 thousand people, there are a number of interesting sights in it. Walking along the mountain trails, which were used to defend against attacks by Saracen pirates, are especially popular with tourists. Along these paths there are several ancient towers - Tore di Marina di Vietri, Torrette Belvedere, Torre di Dragonea, etc. All of them served as a kind of fortresses. And the most famous trail is Sentiero degli Dei - Path of the Gods, which is named so because of the unforgettable views that open along the way.
Also worth seeing are the old city churches - Santa Margherita di Antiochia in Albori, Madonna delle Grazie in Benincasa, Madonna dell Arco, the Renaissance church of San Giovanni Battista with a ceramics-decorated bell tower and the parish church in Raito.
Since Vietri sul Mare is famous for its ceramics, it can be interesting to visit a local ceramic factory built during the Second World War. Today it exhibits a fine collection of contemporary ceramics. And in Vietri itself, the Museum of Ceramics is open - its collections are divided into three parts: religious items, items for daily use and ceramics of the German period.
