Description of the attraction

The Navy Officers' House is an architectural monument of the city of Nikolaev of national importance. This building was built in 1824 by order of the chief commander of the Black Sea Fleet and ports, the military governor of Nikolaev and Sevastopol, Admiral A. Greig, and at first was called the House of flagships and commanders. Here the naval officers had the opportunity to gather their families, hold various receptions, meetings, balls, concerts. A library was housed, as well as cadet classes and a music school.

At one time, Andrei Antonovich Gorenko, the father of the famous poetess Anna Akhmatova, read his lectures in the House of Flagships and Commanders; famous composers M. P. Mussorgsky, N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. On August 30, 1890, a reception was held in this house to mark the 100th anniversary of Nikolaev.

Since 1924, the House of Flagships and Commanders has been called the House of Culture of the Sailor, and in the post-war period it was named the House of Naval Officers and the Center for Culture, Leisure and Education of the Naval Forces of Ukraine.

In 2004, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine transferred the Naval Officers' House to the regional communal property. The authorities wanted to adapt the historic building for the regional philharmonic, but due to the lack of funds to repair the emergency condition of the roof of the House of Officers of the Navy, which caused the house to be significantly damaged, the set goals had to be abandoned. The city authorities have been negotiating for a rather long time on the transfer of the building to the city communal property, and only in August 2010 it was transferred to the city administration for culture and protection of cultural heritage.

In the near future, the House of Officers of the Fleet is planned to be transformed into the Nikolaev People's House, after which it should become a center of recreation, culture and communication for residents of the city of Nikolaev.
