Description of the attraction
The Church of São Francisco was built in 1475-1550 in the Gothic style with a touch of Manueline, designed by Martin Lorenzo on the site of an earlier Romanesque church of the 13th century. Above the entrance, made in the Manueline style, you can see the figure of a pelican - the emblem of King João II, and the astrolabe - the emblem of King Manuel I.
Horseshoe-shaped Moorish arches perfectly fit into the Gothic appearance of the church. The interior of the church is striking in its beauty and variety of decoration - stone, and carved wood, and tiles are used here. The altars are decorated with sculptures and paintings, including those of Flemish masters.
The Church of São Francisco is famous for its Chapel of dos Osos - Chapel of Bones. This 18th century building is decorated from the inside with the bones and skulls of 5,000 Franciscan monks. Above the entrance to the chapel, there is an inscription in Latin meaning "Our bones, which lie here, await yours."
