Description of the attraction
The Egyptian lighthouse in Rethymno was built in the 1830s during the reign of Muhammad Ali, after Crete was handed over to the Egyptians by the Turks. The monumental structure is located in the Old Port of Rethymno, at the end of the ancient breakwater. The 9m high tower with 49m light field was erected by the Egyptians as part of the reconstruction of the port and the restoration of all of Crete.
Rethymno Venetian Harbor Lighthouse is the second largest surviving structure of its kind in Crete after Chania Harbor Lighthouse. In 1864, it came under the control of the French "Lighthouse Company", today the tower is not used for its intended purpose and the lighthouse does not work.
The attraction is within walking distance from the city center and is open for external inspection.
