Description of the attraction
Sutomore is a city located 22 kilometers from Petrovac, with a population of about 5000 people. In summer, the city becomes a pedestrian zone for tourists: the central street Sutomore (as in another resort town - Budva) runs parallel to the highway, along the Adriatic coast. In addition, the Montenegrin railway ends and begins in the city. Crowded beaches and picturesque surroundings make Sutomore one of the most popular Montenegrin towns among tourists.
On the Ratach peninsula, there are the ruins of the ancient Benedictine monastery of the Ratach Mother of God, which is also called the Ratach Abbey. It is located in a conservation area.
The monastery was founded in 1247, in 1571 the Ottoman army completely destroyed it, which caused its devastation. Prior to that, he was also repeatedly attacked by the Ottoman Empire.
It is known that before the monastery stood on the coastline, and the Benedictine brotherhood owned it. Also in the possession of the brotherhood were the surrounding lands, and representatives of the brotherhood were actively involved in the trade and production of olive oil.
It was in Ratach Abbey in the 12th century that the first written literary monument of the South Slavs appeared. It is about the "Chronicle of the priest Duklyanin".
The ruins of the Church of St. Mary, which was built in the XII-XIII centuries, have been preserved on the same territory. The icon of the Mother of God was kept here - an object of worship for many pilgrims.
