Description of the attraction
Corral de Carbon, or as it is called the Coal Yard, is located in Granada, not far from the Cathedral, on Via Maria Pineda. This is a former Muslim inn, which was built during the reign of the Nasrid dynasty, before 1336.
Corral de Carbon is an ancient building with a courtyard, the entrance to which is made in the Mudejar style. Once it served as a haven for merchants and traders who stayed here. In addition, the city market was located here. When the inn was sold at auction in 1531, it began to be used as a coal warehouse, after a while a guest house was created in the Corral de Carbon.
During the 20th century, the Corral de Carbon was restored several times. In 1933, after its acquisition by the state - designed by Leopoldo Torres Belbas, in 1992 - under the leadership of the architect Rafael Soler Marquez. In 2006, large-scale restoration work was again carried out, which cost the state 56 thousand euros.
The unusually beautiful main entrance, made in the form of an arch, is decorated with amazing plaster moldings. The courtyard is accessed by a lobby crowned with a dome decorated with curls. The courtyard building itself consists of three floors, each of which has a gallery with stone columns.
Currently, the premises of the Corral de Carbon house the Andalusian Cultural Council and the Granada Orchestra.
In 1918, the Corral de Carbon was declared a National Historic Landmark.
