The construction of a new stone building designed by Oiva Kallio was completed in 1931.

The main exposition occupies four floors of the museum - this is an area of 1100 m2. The lower floor of the museum is reserved for seasonal and children's exhibitions. The expositions for children are based on the books of the Finnish children's writer - Mauri Kunnas. On the ground floor there is a large-scale model of the pre-war center of Oulu in 1938. Major exhibitions are held on other floors.
