Description of the attraction
Cathedral of San Giusto - the main church of the city of Susa, standing in its historical center, and the seat of the local bishop. Initially, the cathedral was just the church of the Benedictine monastery of the same name, founded in 1029 by order of the Marquis Olderico Manfredi to store the recently found relics of Saint Justus (San Giusto). The church was built around 1100 and has since been rebuilt and modified several times. Only in 1772, when the Diocese of Susa was established, the former monastery church received the status of the Cathedral with all the honors it deserves.
San Giusto is built in Romanesque style. The façade is adorned with terracotta decorations and is connected to a 4th century Roman gate, Porta Savoie, to the south of the cathedral. On the same side rises a six-story bell tower with a row of vaulted windows, which dominates the surrounding residential buildings.
Inside, the cathedral is shaped like a Latin cross with a central nave and two side chapels. There is also a baptistery, which dates from an earlier era than the church itself. And in the eastern part of the church there is a small bowl with holy water, installed back in 1688. Attention is drawn to the statue, which is believed to depict the Marquess of Turin Adelaide, the daughter and heiress of Olderico Manfredi and the wife of the Savoyard Count Otto - she was the founder of the royal dynasty of Savoy.
