Description of the attraction
The Classe pine forest is an old, vast and charming forest area that stretches over three thousand hectares along the Adriatic coast south of Ravenna. Classe is the ancient district of Ravenna, where the ancient Romans founded a port with docks to build and repair ships of their fleet. This port even today leaves the feeling that already in those distant times it was surrounded by a pine forest.
Typical Mediterranean plants surround the centuries-old pine grove on all sides - here you can see heather, wild rose hips, medicinal evening primrose, madder, mastic tree, sarsaparilla, etc. Shrubs are represented by lesser periwinkle and wolf's laurel, asparagus and common privet, mountain ash and German medlar. And under the trees and shrubs, many mushrooms and … wild orchids grow. Admire this lush greenery while hiking or cycling along one of the forest's many trails.
The bird kingdom of the pine grove is very diverse: nightingales, robins, finches, black-headed, gray and mountain warblers, blackbirds, mischievous thrush and polyphonic mockingbirds nest in the tree branches. Here and there woodpeckers and trills of various songbirds can be heard. And in the sky are soaring predatory common owls, house owls and falcons.
The Ravenna Pine Forest is an amazing place with a long history that can be explored together with its problems and actions taken to solve them, primarily to protect the rich diversity of local wildlife.
