The order to found the city of Arkhangelsk was given in 1584 by Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The city is spread out on the banks of the Northern Dvina, which flows into the White Sea a few tens of kilometers away. The Severodvinskaya embankment of Arkhangelsk stretches between the Kuznechevsky and Severodvinsky bridges along the right bank of the river.
On the embankment, residents of Arkhangelsk gather during folk festivities in honor of the City Day, celebrations on the occasion of the Day of the Navy, on Maslenitsa and the New Year. Festive fireworks are held here, and during the white nights, the Northern Dvina embankment traditionally becomes an open area for street theaters to perform during the festival.
What should a tourist see?
You can get to the embankment of Arkhangelsk by bus routes 1, 3, 7, 42 and 62. Its length is about five kilometers, and this street is considered one of the central streets in the city. Several attractions of Arkhangelsk are located on the bank of the Northern Dvina:
- The monument to Peter I is an exact copy of the monument by M. M. Antokolsky in St. Petersburg.
- The monument to M. V. Lomonosov by Martos appeared on the embankment in 1826. It was cast with folk funds and belongs to the list of federal attractions.
- In honor of the Solovetsky cabin boys who died during the Great Patriotic War, a monument to the sculptor V. Sogoyan appeared on the banks of the Northern Dvina.
- Surkov's house, built in an eclectic style, is a typical example of mid-19th century architecture.
- Commemorative stele about conferring the title of the City of Military Glory to Arkhangelsk.
- Monument to Admiral Kuznetsov, a hero of the Great Patriotic War and a native of the Arkhangelsk region.
The numbering of houses on the embankment of Arkhangelsk does not obey the classical rules and both even and odd numbers can be found on both sides.
Movie star schooner
On the embankment of Arkhangelsk, the three-masted schooner "West", built in 1949 and serving as a cargo and then a training vessel for cadets of nautical schools, is eternally moored. "West" took part in the filming of the film "Georgy Sedov" about the polar expedition of 1912-19214.
Bad weather and natural disasters brought the ship into an emergency condition and now the legendary ship is awaiting restoration. An exposition of the local museum of local lore is located nearby on the embankment in the architectural complex Arkhangelsk Gostiny Dvory.
