Description of the attraction

St. Martin's Cathedral is one of the architectural gems of Mukachevo. In the courtyard of the temple there is a real treasure of the city - the Gothic chapel of St. Joseph, built in the 14th century.

The church, as you can see it in our time, was built in 1904 on the site of the dilapidated first city Catholic church. The Chapel of St. Joseph is what remains of the old church. From the 14th century there have been preserved tombstones of the Middle Ages, imprinted on a slab with epitaphs, and paintings. The new temple, like the previous one, was built in the Gothic style in accordance with the best traditions and canons of the construction of Catholic cathedrals. Three pointed domes directed upward, the main of which completes the central tower, decorated with a clock, the main entrance with a vaulted arch and columns, make an unforgettable impression. The décor of the building is elegant and surprisingly harmonious, there is no room for excess and overabundance of details, but there is no shortage of them either.

Inside, the temple is spacious and light, the entrance is decorated with an altarpiece - a painting by the Hungarian artist V. Madaras, which depicts the first Hungarian king, St. Stephen, presenting his crown to God. In 1913, the organ of the "Rieger Brothers" company was installed in the cathedral, which is still here today.

Now in the Church of St. Martin is the episcopal department of the Transcarpathian diocese of the Roman Catholic Church. St. Martin, after whom the temple is named, is the patron saint of the city of Mukachevo.
