Description of the attraction

Flims and Laax are two neighboring resorts in Switzerland. St. Martin's Church is known for being the main attraction of one of these resorts, namely the city of Flims. This church is considered the oldest in the city, since it was built in the 9th century. Moreover, it is valued as an architectural monument, because it is one of the few buildings made in a truly Romanesque style, which, as you know, is the predecessor of the Gothic.

In 1512, it was decided to begin the first restoration in the period of the church's existence. By that time, the building was dilapidated and required major repairs. During the work, the architect Andreas Büller made a considerable number of changes to the interior of the church, but, nevertheless, retained its appearance. The altar and choirs were replaced due to the fact that in the state they came to, they were dangerous for the parishioners, as they could collapse at any moment. The interior decoration demonstrates the grace of the Renaissance era, which was flourishing at that time.

The architect could not finish building the bell tower, therefore, its construction was completed only two centuries later. This explains the presence of a dome crowning the tower of the bell tower, which contains elements of the Rococo style, but in general the church complex has been preserved in its original form.
