Description of the attraction

Obidos is known as the city presented as a wedding gift to Queen Isabella by the future King of Portugal Afonso V on their wedding day. But not only this makes the city the most romantic place not only in Portugal, but also in Europe. The narrow cobblestone streets of the city are lined with colorful houses adorned with geraniums and bougainvillea, Gothic-style portals and windows and white churches give a unique flavor to this medieval town. It is also worth noting that almost all of the city's monuments are considered monuments of national importance.

Among the city's monuments, it is worth mentioning the elegant main temple of the city, the Church of Santa Maria, which stands on the site of a Visigothic temple, which was later turned into a mosque. To see this church, you need to walk along the main street of the city of Rua Direita, which leads to Praça de Santa Maria (Plaza Santa Maria), where this small church with a white bell tower and an unusual Renaissance portal stands.

The temple was built in the XII century, but was rebuilt several times. The building that we see today dates from the 16th century. Inside the temple, the walls are decorated with beautiful blue and white tiles "azulesush" from the 17th-18th centuries and a beautiful painted ceiling. The right side of the altar is decorated with paintings by the famous Portuguese painter of the 17th century Joseph de Obidos on religious themes, and on the left is the 16th century Renaissance tomb, decorated with carvings, which is considered a masterpiece among the sculptural works of this style.
