The regional center of the Vologda Oblast is not a very large city by Russian standards: it is home to just over three hundred thousand people. Scientists call the city's historical heritage especially valuable: two hundred twenty historical monuments have been preserved here, some of which are located on the embankments of Vologda and in the old quarters.

Rivers and streams

Vologda was built on both banks of the river of the same name, into which many small ones flow - Zolotukha and Shogrash, Chernavka and Kopanka. Some of them are put into chimneys, while others adorn the city with pretty Vologda embankments.

Project "Nason-city"

In recent years, Vologda has been actively developing its tourist infrastructure. Hotels and cafes are being built in the city, squares and parks are being improved, roads are being asphalted. As part of the ambitious project "Nason-City", the main embankment of Vologda is being reconstructed:

  • The section of the Vologda River bank from the Red Bridge to the confluence of the Sodema River was strengthened, paved with paving slabs and new lanterns were installed. The slopes were paved with decorative stone.
  • The project includes the improvement of sections up to the 800th anniversary bridge and from Lugovaya Street to Oktyabrsky Bridge.
  • Parallel to the carriageway on the embankment, a pedestrian path has been laid, and later fishermen's platforms will be added.
  • They plan to decorate the embankment in Vologda with the help of art objects, and to make it comfortable by installing benches for rest.

The organizers of the improvement works on Prechistenskaya Embankment plan to continue them in 2016.

Opposite the Kremlin

Another embankment in Vologda, where locals like to invite guests, is named in honor of the Sixth Army. It is from this bank of Vologda that the best view of the Vologda Kremlin opens, founded in the 16th century by order of Ivan the Terrible for defensive purposes. The work began on the day of the holy apostles Jason and Sosipater, which is why the fortress was often called Nason-city.

The main architectural and historical monuments preserved on the territory of the Vologda Kremlin date back to the 16th century. Saint Sophia Cathedral was built as the main religious building of Nason City. Today, a part of the exposition of the historical and architectural museum-reserve is located in the building of the temple.

The Bishop's Courtyard is the main museum hall. It contains icons of the bed, including those of the 14th century, paintings, sculptures and objects of applied art.
