Sevastopol is the city of Russia's naval glory, the cultural and historical center of the Crimean peninsula and the largest seaport on the Black Sea coast. For his feat in the Great Patriotic War, he was awarded the honorary title of Hero City.
Numerous tourist attractions are concentrated on the Sevastopol embankment, which stretches for two kilometers from the Grafskaya pier to the monument to Vice Admiral Kornilov.
Monumentalism on the Black Sea coast
The embankment of Sevastopol, weary of the sun, is a vivid example of the architectural style called monumentalism. The granite pavement is decorated with massive building facades, cast-iron chains of fences and many monuments that tell about memorable events in the history of the city. The story is as glorious as it is tragic.
The embankment bears the name of Vice Admiral V. A. Kornilov, who died in the battle for the Malakhov Kurgan in October 1854 during the Crimean War. A memorial sign in honor of the hero is installed at the end of the promenade. Next to it is a pier for ferries sailing to the North side of the bay.
From Nikolaevsky to Khrustalny
Nikolaevsky Cape is the starting point of the Sevastopol embankment. During the two-kilometer journey along the Black Sea, the tourist will see many city sights that have become the hallmarks of the heroic Sevastopol:
- In honor of the most important moment in the defense of the city in the Crimean War, a memorial sign was erected about the beginning of the floating bridge - the pontoon crossing of 1855.
- The Sports Club of the Black Sea Fleet has several dozen stands with a magnificent view of the Black Sea bay of Sevastopol.
- The monument to the sunken ships 20 meters from the shore opposite the stone wall is the main symbol of the Hero City.
- Admiralty anchors on a high stone parapet are a tribute to the armed uprising of the Black Sea sailors in 1905. The rebellion was led by the legendary Lieutenant Schmidt. You can go down to the sea along semicircular stairs in this part of the Sevastopol embankment.
- A sundial on a granite pavement is another popular place in Sevastopol. Here they make dates and feed the pigeons.
