Description of the attraction
The memorial dedicated to the defense of Sevastopol in 1941-1942 is an imposing bas-relief on the wall dividing P. S. Nakhimov Square and Matrossky Boulevard. The authors of the memorial are V. V. Yakovlev (sculptor), I. E. Fialko (architect). They successfully solved the main purpose of the memorial - to convey the fortitude and heroism of the city's defenders.
The basis of the composition is reinforced concrete blocks, in which seams and texture are left for expressiveness. The granite boards bear the names of the army units that defended Sevastopol, as well as industrial enterprises that provided assistance to the navy and army. Here is a list of the military who received the title of heroes of the country for the defense of the city. On the left side, on the wall, you can see the anchor rod, and there is also a memorable date. In the central part of the wall there is a bas-relief depicting a soldier. The machine gun is in his right hand, his left hand is extended forward, reflecting the blow of three bayonets. Three bayonets symbolize the three assaults on the city.
The first offensive began on October 30, 1941 and lasted the entire November. The Nazis wanted to use the surprise factor, but they failed. Then the enemies began to collect heavy equipment and troops. December 17 - the day of the beginning of the second assault. The fighting continued until January 1942. In some places the Germans managed to occupy the northern outskirts of the city, but the defenders of the city held back the onslaught and did not let the enemy pass.
In the winter of 1942, the Sevastopol people held the defense. The Germans began the third assault in the summer months of the same year. The last battles took place in the area of Chersonesos. The garrison of Sevastopol fought bravely until July 3, when the order was given to leave the city.
The memorial was opened in 1967. In 1973, an honor guard post appeared at this place. Flowers are laid here as a sign of respect and memory to the deceased defenders.
