Description of the attraction

A beautiful obelisk erected in honor of the courage and heroism of the defenders of the Arctic rises on the high top of one of the steep hills, which are formed by the activity of the Varnichny Brook, today hidden in a concrete pipe. This is a monument to the 6th heroic company, located on Lenin Street.

Even before the start of World War II, the 6th battery, belonging to the 143rd artillery regiment and the 14th rifle division, was located on an island called Kildin. It is known that after the incredible success of the German troops in Norway, which happened in 1940, the Soviet command was very afraid of the actions of enemy troops in the Murmansk region. On the Rybachiy Peninsula, located near the Kildin Island, batteries were installed in a short time, which were intended to protect the sea territories approaching the Kola Bay. The 143rd Artillery Regiment was one of the best in the ranks of the Red Army; the famous Mikhail Frunze was listed in this regiment as its honorary member. During the first day of the war, the regiment shot down an enemy plane with the first salvo fire of four 122-mm howitzers of the famous M-30, and after a while, it was able to fire on a German submarine.

As soon as the situation worsened, the battery was transferred to a crossroads near Murmansk. With the help of horses, 2.5 tons of guns were delivered. The 6th battery became the city's last shelter, and it did not disappoint. For a week, the gunners desperately repelled the enemy's onslaught. On September 14, the last battle took place, when German troops surrounded the artillerymen, led by Lieutenant Lysenko Grigory. It is believed that 37 people died at that place.

In the blessed memory of the heroic deed, on November 6, 1959, in the city of Murmansk, a solemn opening of the memorial monument to the courageous soldiers of the heroic battery took place. The erection of the monument was carried out under the direction of the architect D. K.

From the side of the avenue, a wide staircase leads to the foot of the monument. The monument is a fairly high pedestal resting on a powerful foot, which is lined with greenish tiles, on top of which there is a 76-mm military divisional gun of the ZIS-3 brand, belonging to the model of 1942. The barrel of the cannon is directed towards the northwest, from which the brave troops received the enemy and fell bravely in an unequal battle. On the main side of the pedestal there is a memorial plaque on which there are several phrases telling about the feat of desperate soldiers, as well as a wreath made of bronze.

It should be noted that there is some inaccuracy on the monument. The 6th battery was armed not with cannons, but with military howitzers - a special artillery weapon that was intended to carry out hinged fire. Most likely, at the time when the monument was erected, the soldiers could not distinguish this type of weapon, therefore, in the place of the howitzer, namely on the pedestal, the place was occupied by a cannon. More than a hundred thousand weapons of this kind were fired, and it was widespread throughout the entire war, including the Kola Peninsula. It can be added that the type of military artillery system, immortalized as a monument, is of interest not only among specialists, but also among ordinary citizens. The uncomplicated, simple and laconic appearance of the monument greatly enhances the emotional state of the viewer, which makes the monument especially remarkable and memorable.

The monument to the 6th Heroic Battery is one of the most significant and main memorials of military glory in the city of Murmansk. In the past, at the site of the monument, various ceremonies were held, which were associated with giving honors to the brave defenders of the entire Arctic, as well as to those soldiers who died in battles during the Great Patriotic War.
