Description of the attraction

The picturesque Greek island of Mykonos is one of the most visited islands in the Cyclades archipelago. The warm waters of the Aegean Sea, picturesque landscapes, magnificent beaches and the hospitality of local residents attract a huge number of tourists here from year to year.

About 7-8 km east of the island's capital, Hora, lies the picturesque village of Ano Mera. It is the second largest settlement in Mykonos and also one of the oldest settlements on the island. Ano Mera is a typical Cycladic town with traditional architecture, cobbled streets and a special atmosphere of peace and comfort. Here you will find a good selection of comfortable hotels and apartments, as well as excellent restaurants and taverns where you can relax and enjoy excellent Greek cuisine. Since the town is located almost in the center of the island, and its magnificent beaches are located at some distance from Ano Mera (about 3-4 km), the ideal option would be to rent a car. However, you can also get to the coast by bus.

The main attraction of the town of Ano Mera is the Monastery of Our Lady of Tourliani, dedicated to the patroness of the island. This majestic temple is located in the central square of the city. The construction of the monastery dates back to 1542. True, at the end of the 18th century, some changes were made to its architecture. The magnificent carved iconostasis in the Baroque style with unique icons draws special attention in the interior. There is also an interesting museum in the monastery, which displays beautiful icons of the Byzantine period, church vestments, the first monastery bells and various religious utensils. In the churchyard there is a chapel and a beautiful marble fountain with sculptural decorations. The Monastery of Our Lady of Tourliani played an important role during the German occupation.

In the vicinity of Ano Mera, there is another important attraction of the island - the Paleokastro Monastery (18th century).

The unhurried pace of life in Ano Mera, the relaxing atmosphere and the local flavor are perfect for lovers of a relaxing holiday.
