Description of the attraction
In the central region of Kaliningrad, in a small square opposite the Drama Theater, there is a monument to the famous German playwright, historian, humanist poet, professor and philosopher Friedrich Schiller. The historical value of the monument lies in the fact that it was installed on November 10, 1910, back in the German Königsberg, and the author of the work of art is the famous German sculptor Stanislav Kauer. The monument is a full-length bronze figure on a high pedestal with a memorial plaque where the poet's name is written in Russian and German and the years of his life.
Based on historical facts, we can say that the opening of the sculpture of the German thinker (who never lived in Königsberg) was timed to coincide with the centenary of the Königsberg Opera House. The theater (1810) began its history with Schiller's production of "Wilhelm Tell". During the capture of Koenigsberg in 1945, the monument suffered from shell fragments, but was not destroyed, and in the mid-fifties the restored sculpture of the playwright began to adorn the square of the Regional Drama Theater. In 2007, the square was ennobled, and a fountain appeared next to the monument.
Nowadays, the cultural landmark of Kaliningrad is protected by the state, and for the last ten years the area around the monument has become a meeting place for creative people and informal youth.
