Description of the attraction
On the Long Embankment, next to the pier, from where excursion boats leave for Gdynia, Sopot and Westerplatte, you can see the ancient Gothic-style water gates, which are called Khlebnye (Khlebnitska Brama). They were built in the second half of the XIV century. The three-storey gate with an area of 25.5 x 7.5 m was rebuilt in the 15th century and then acquired features characteristic of Flemish architecture. Since then, this building has hardly changed. During World War II, they were not damaged by explosions, so now they are not a reconstruction, even a very talented one, but an original structure.
Khlebnitska Brama is considered one of the most ancient city gates that close the street leading to the port. It is interesting, first of all, for its decor. From the side of the embankment, above the arched doorway, you can see the coat of arms of Gdansk, which was adopted during the reign of the Teutonic Order (two crosses on a shield). The crown was placed on the coat of arms only in 1457.
Passing through the gate, we find ourselves on Khlebnitskaya Street. The facade of the gate, overlooking this street, is decorated with another coat of arms, which belonged to the princes Sobeslavitsy. It depicts a heraldic lily, which is why the gate is often called the Brahma Lily.
The majestic Bread Gate is built in the shape of a rectangle. In the old days, from the side of the embankment, they had a superstructure in the form of two towers. Now only one turret has survived, topped with a lower roof than its destroyed neighbor. The facades are decorated with niches and a beautiful brick border.
