Description of the attraction

The Arsenal building owes its name to the Arsenal Square, which is located in the northeastern corner of Kotor. The Arsenal building was erected here for a number of reasons: it is under the protection of the powerful ancient bastion of the Citadel with the towering Campana tower and the shipyard on the Kotor embankment, right in front of the bastion. All this makes the building successful from a military point of view.

Before, on the Square of Arms, the city's defenders were preparing to repel the attacks of the city's enemies. In 1539 there was an invasion of the famous sea robbers of the Algerian pirate Barbarossa Haydreddin. The attackers failed to break through the city's defenses, which facilitated their retreat after three days of siege.

Today, the building of the Kotor Arsenal houses a city military galley called "St. Trifon".

The reconstruction of the building in the early sixties of the XX century entailed significant changes in the appearance of the building: the steep and high roof was removed, instead of one floor, several floors appeared on the mighty arches towering over the basement. An ancient inscription has been preserved on the front doors, notifying that materials for the crew of the bay are stored here. Previously, the floor could be accessed through a stone staircase, but it was removed at the end of the 19th century. This was due to the conversion of the Arsenal building into a military bakery, which supplied the entire Kotor garrison with bread.

Today, side walls have been added to the Arsenal building leading to the second floor. Thus, today you can see two floors and a basement.
