Description of the attraction
Fremantle Market is a public market located in a building at the corner of South Terrace and Henderson Street in Fremantle.
Built in Romanesque style, the market building houses about 150 stalls for artisans, designers and merchants, as well as fresh food stalls in the backyard. The foundation stone was laid by the Governor of Western Australia, Sir John Forrest on November 6, 1897, and the main construction was carried out from 1898 to 1902. The inner walls of the building are lined with limestone, and the high iron roof is supported by wooden columns. The main entrance is a richly decorated stone archway from Henderson Street. Until the 1950s, the building housed a wholesale food market. And then, until the early 1970s, it operated as a packaging and distribution center. In 1975, the building was renovated: the main structures were retained, but the interior had to be remodeled to accommodate the retail counters. A bar was built on one corner, and the terraces were moved. To the north of the main market hall, the so-called Farmersky Lane was erected, where trays with fresh vegetables and fruits were placed under tarpaulin awnings. In 1993, Fremantle Market was listed as a Historic and Cultural Place.
The market is open from Friday to Sunday and is a popular destination not only among city residents, but also among tourists who consider it "the soul of Port Fremantle".
