Description of the attraction
Side was once one of the most important ports in Pamphylia. It was founded by Greek colonists from the Aeolith in the 7th century BC. Later, the Persians and Lycians, the Seleucids, the rulers of Pergamum and Rome, as well as Alexander the Great ruled in Side. In the II-III centuries AD, the city became rich on the trade in slaves, especially beautiful girls. This period is considered the stage of Side's prosperity. The most interesting and beautiful monuments were created in Side when the city was under the rule of the Roman Empire. Here, to this day, you can feel the power of the Roman era and the greatness of its rulers.
Side begins behind the high city gates, which were erected in 71 BC as a sign of respect for the Emperor Vespasian, as well as for his son and heir Titus. Vespasian ruled the city for seventy years, from AD 9 to 79. A sculptural portrait of this emperor is kept in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin.
The arched gate is more than six meters high and is considered the main gate of the city. Over the years, the appearance of the gate has changed a lot and now they look different, but the walls are still preserved. Their appearance is quite interesting and original, however, at present it is very difficult to assess it - the gate was badly damaged. Despite its dilapidated state, the gate still amazes visitors with its majesty and uniqueness.
The main gates of the city are located between two towers. On the sides of the gate, on the walls, there are niches with arches, in which statues of noble people and the emperor were previously located. If you go through the gate, you can see a huge ancient square and enjoy the view of the beautiful Nymphaeum fountain.
An arched gate is located in the northern part of the city and leads to its historical part. The road leading from the gate is considered the main street of the old town.
